The flavor of the lingonberry is more tangy than all the other berries combined. Lingonberries also contain high levels of flavonoids, especially lignans, which prevent cancer and osteoporosis and reduce the risk of urinary tract infections. Wild lingonberries are higher in beneficial components than those grown commercially.
Lingonberry preserves are excellent on crepes with ice cream or whipped cream, but many people also like them with meat dishes - like cranberries. They can be found in Nordic areas, especially in Sweden and Finland where, due a lack of warmth and 24 hours sun light, they ripe slowly allowing the flavor to develop to an extraordinary intensity and sweetness.
Lingonberries grow on low shrubs in dry forest areas and the harvesting is VERY labor intensive. Those of you that have participated in this know what I am talking about!
